Rivers Antoine Rum Factory is on the Eastern coast of Grenada, past Grenville and heading toward Bathway. Unfortunately to get here you are going to need to either rent a car, take a tour or hire a taxi. BUT it is worth it!
You want to get there early. They crush the sugar cane with a water wheel from the 1700s and it only runs when there is cane. The cane comes in the morning and by 1:00-2:00 p.m. it has all been crushed.
Rivers Rum, like all Grenadian rum is ridiculously strong, in fact the rum they make is not legal to take on the plane! They are now making some rum that can be purchased and brought home but watch any alcohol you buy to ensure it can be exported.
My favourite part of the tour is where the cane is being boiled, I love the smell of molasses and this room is just rich in aroma. Now where the rum gets bottled, the smell of alcohol nearly knocked me over!
Do sample the rum at the end of the tour, but if you are driving be very careful just a couple of shots will definitely impair you.
In my opinion I have taken some of my best photos here, it is just such a beautiful setting.
