The Sendall tunnel built in the late 1890's is something I recommend everyone go through. This tunnel connects the Carenage to the downtown. It is the fastest way to get to the Carenage and is a one way heading into the downtown but pedestrians all walk on the left side in the below picture.
To say the fit is tight is an understatement. If you are nervous just stop and let people/traffic go around you.
The best time to go through is early in the morning. Although I walk through in the afternoon after work, it is a little intimidating if it was your first go through. The only other option is to go up and over, which is a big, big hike! I have never gone over, but I might just to say I have, but that would be the only reason I would do it.
