The spice market in downtown St. George's is one block north of the Esplanade Mall (Cruise Ship Mall). Find the Digicel building and head in. You also happen to be on Market Hill St. It is one of the steepest streets in Grenada.
The market is the busiest on Wednesdays and Saturdays when all the vendors are there. Things you may not realize you need are:
- vanilla extract -I bought a 1 litre bottle of pure vanilla extract for about $13 Canadian),
- vanilla beans- you can put them into white sugar and flavour your sugar for baking mmmm
- cocoa beans- these are going to be really bitter but it is interesting to see what cocoa looks like raw. You can crush it up back home and add it into a chocolate bark and it would be delicious
- Calabash bowls- they come in all sizes, little ones will run you about 50 cents Canadian and a large one about $2.50. Great to store change in when you get home, paper clips at the office or any little things that would be handy to be able to grab quickly. I have about 50 of them- I am giving a bunch away but we will probably keep about half!
- Spice Necklaces- these will scent a car with a yummy aroma or a closet. To refresh you just soak in water and let dry. Sadly we learned not to wrap them in plastic bags for long periods of time- oops.
- Roasted peanuts- these are at the far side of the market. $1.50 XCD for a baby of tasty roasted peanuts, they are candied with a hint of ginger.
Farmer's Markets
If you are staying in Grenada at a place where you get your own groceries then you want the market that is past the bus station the same days as the Spice Market. Here you will find local vendors selling fruits and vegetables with better prices than the spice market.
The other option is every Wednesday behind the youth center is a great farmers market (the youth centre is just past the Spiceland Mall heading toward Spice Island Resort). Here you will also find excellent produce and whole chickens. We always get our chicken here.
